Dictionary of places
The books divided a face under several frames. This app covers three of them. Each entry says where the place is and quotes what the books wrote about it, in the original words.
Three sections 三停
- Upper section 上停
From the hairline down to the space between the brows. The band that holds the forehead.
- Middle section 中停
From between the brows down to below the nose. The band that holds the eyes and the nose.
- Lower section 下停
From below the nose to the point of the chin. The band that holds the mouth and the jaw.
Five peaks 五嶽
- Southern peak 南嶽 衡山
The forehead. It is matched with Mount Heng.
- Central peak 中嶽 嵩山
The nose. The encyclopedia describes it as running from between the eyes to the bridge, matched with Mount Song.
- Northern peak 北嶽 恒山
The chin. It is matched with Mount Heng of the north.
- Eastern and western peaks 東嶽泰山 西嶽華山
The two cheekbones. Our two sources assign the sides in opposite ways, so this app does not pick one. It prints both.
Twelve palaces 十二宮
- Palace of destiny 命宮
Between the brows, above the root of the nose.
- Palace of wealth 財帛宮
The nose.
- Palace of siblings 兄弟宮
The two eyebrows.
- Palace of house and land 田宅宮

- Palace of children 男女宮
Under both eyes, called the tear hall.
- Palace of servants 奴僕宮
The lower jaw, said to adjoin the mouth.
- Palace of spouse 妻妾宮
Outside the corner of the eye, called the fish tail.
- Palace of illness 疾厄宮
Below the brow centre, at the root of the nose.
- Palace of movement 遷移宮
The edge of the forehead by the ends of the brows, called the heavenly storehouse.
- Palace of office 官祿宮
The middle of the forehead.
- Palace of fortune 福德宮
At the heavenly storehouse, running down to the jaw. It overlaps the palace of movement.
- Palace of countenance 相貌宮
Not one spot. It is the five peaks and the three sections looked at together.
A place the sources record differently
Our two sources disagree about which cheekbone is the eastern peak and which is the western one. We could not establish which is right, so we print both instead of choosing.
